One step at a time! It’s the secret to success! For you golf enthusiasts (I’m one of them for sure), that was on full display today at the Masters in Augusta Georgia with Rory McIlroy. He has wanted to win this championship since 2011. He was leading, he was behind, he was even and then forced a playoff with Justin Rose. With his back to the wall, Rory ended up winning. He was the first Masters winner who bogeyed 4 holes and still won. What‘s a bogey??? It’s when you take more shots than is allocated for a hole i.e. par. I witnessed his strong desire and determination to win. It was clear to me that he also wasn’t just doing it for himself. He was doing it for his lifelong caddie and friend, for his family and especially for his parents who sacrificed so much to ensure he had all the opportunities to be successful. He was so present and in the moment throughout the 18 holes he played – even when a few shots went astray.
Not to be overly dramatic, I also saw this same “never give up” resilient mindset at least 3 times in the past two weeks in the office and just like watching Rory today, it was a pleasure to behold! It’s an especially sweet win when the path has not been easy. There are times along the way when all you can see is failure but, at the same time, you also imagine success. That duality of thought is real, and it takes perseverance to keep fighting through until the very end when there is no guarantee of what is going to happen. It takes a winning mindset to get to the end. A winning mindset involves staying optimistic and resilient. It means being vulnerable and asking for help and support when you need it. Setbacks are just opportunities to learn and to discover just how strong you are so never ever wish the road is always easy. You won’t learn anything about life or yourself if things are always easy. Embrace challenges as they reveal your true strength and teach invaluable life lessons, making the journey worthwhile.
